If you are unexpectedly pregnant while still living with your parents or in high school or college, this is a very vulnerable and scary time for you.  Read this article on steps you can take to ensure you are informed and, most importantly, feel supported. Know that you are not alone.

Confirm Your Pregnancy

Are you missing your period or relying on other common pregnancy symptoms? It’s essential to confirm the pregnancy before delivering such delicate news to your parents if you’re not sure of their reaction. Schedule a FREE appointment for pregnancy testing and ultrasound so you can use lab-grade pregnancy tests as well as confirm the state of your pregnancy.

Getting information and confirmation before deciding what to do is one of the most critical steps.

Choose The Right Time (And Support)

Make sure you choose a time when one or both of your parents are not busy but tell them you need to talk to them and sit them both down.

If it helps soothe any anxiety, make sure you have support, such as a boyfriend or trusted friend, when you tell them. Having someone with you is vital If one or both of your parents have a history of violence or extreme moods.

Anticipate Their Reaction

If you anticipate that telling your parents may provoke a reaction, placing you in harm’s way, make sure you rely on support. A trusted adult, such as a teacher or friend of a parent, is best.

If your parents aren’t expecting this or are even unaware that you are sexually active, be prepared that they may be upset, shocked, and surprised. Their reaction is perfectly normal, especially if they have strong opinions about teen pregnancy or are completely surprised.

Regardless of their reaction, it’s helpful to stick to the facts. Write them down if you need to. You should tell them:

-You’re pregnant and need their help

-Who else you have told

-What you are considering doing

If you have a healthy relationship with your parents, they will most likely support and love you. If your relationship is rocky, they still need to know, but make sure you have other people in your circle as well. Again, having a trusted adult with more life experience will go a long way in helping you make the right decision.
