Is the Abortion Pill Available Online in NY?

Even after the recent Supreme Court decision, abortion is still available in New York state law for pregnancies up to 24 weeks. This includes access to the abortion pill (sometimes referred to as self-managed or at-home abortion) as well as surgical abortion (an in-clinic procedure).

In recent years, the FDA has revised its original policy on the abortion pill, which has allowed certain certified prescribers or pharmacies to dispense the abortion pill through online orders and mail distribution. Originally expanded during the COVID-19 pandemic, this is a change to previous advisories that required the abortion pill only to be distributed in-clinic, in person with the patient, and by a medical professional.

It is worth noting that despite these changes in restrictions on the abortion pill, the FDA does still advise the general public against ordering medications online, or rather of the dangers that can result from ordering from a potentially disreputable source. As with ordering anything online, there is a higher chance of fraud, variation in medication dosages or ingredients, or disreputable distributors.

What Does This Mean for Me And My Options?

The abortion pill may be easily accessed by mail, but there are several risks and pieces of information you should know about first. Keep in mind that the abortion pill is still a life-changing medication with potential complications or restrictions for patients with certain health conditions.

The use of the abortion pill for the termination of early pregnancies is approved by the FDA for pregnancies up to 10 weeks. Taking the abortion pill past this point in pregnancy could result in medical complications such as incomplete abortion.

Because of this, it’s imperative to know how far along you are in your pregnancy before taking the abortion pill. The best way to confirm this information is by receiving an ultrasound from a licensed medical professional such as a nurse sonographer.

Through ultrasound, you can confirm the gestational age, the location of the pregnancy, and if the pregnancy is viable. This information can help you determine your best next steps, such as if any complications are present that would require a different type of medical attention (like ectopic pregnancy, which cannot be resolved through abortion care).

What Other Risks Do I Need to Know?

Alongside getting these important questions answered through an ultrasound, you should also make note of the potential risks and side effects associated with taking the abortion pill. The Mayo Clinic states the following as potential physical risks of the abortion pill:

  • Incomplete abortion, which may need to be followed by surgical abortion
  • Heavy and prolonged bleeding
  • Infection
  • Fever
  • Digestive system discomfort

If you have other medical concerns, it is important to consult with a doctor before taking the abortion pill as well. For instance, the abortion pill is not recommended if you have a blood disorder or heart condition, if you have an IUD, if you take a blood thinner medication or if you do not have access to emergency medical care for potential follow-up appointments.

Ordering a pill online may seem simple and easy, but you should think through the potential consequences of taking this medication outside of the supervision of a medical professional to put your health and safety first. You deserve the best for your unique needs – make sure you’re getting that out of your medical care.
