Ultrasound gives you the information you can’t get from other tests. Even though you’ve taken a pregnancy test, an ultrasound provides additional information about your pregnancy and health.

What Is An Ultrasound?

An ultrasound is an imaging procedure that uses high-frequency sound waves to create a visual image of your pregnancy. Our technician places a gel-like substance on your abdomen, and an instrument called a transducer is rubbed over the gel.

The transducer picks up echoes of the sound waves inside. They bounce back and reveal an image of the inside of your uterus, which you view on a computer screen.

What You Will Learn From An Ultrasound

Your ultrasound exam will answer three essential pregnancy issues.

  1. Is the pregnancy located in your uterus?

Although rare, some pregnancies do not implant in the uterus. These are called ectopic pregnancies. Often, an ectopic pregnancy will implant in the fallopian tubes that lead to the uterus.

An ectopic pregnancy is extremely dangerous and even life-threatening. If your ultrasound reveals you have an ectopic pregnancy, you need to see your health care provider as soon as possible.

  1. Is the pregnancy viable, or have you miscarried?

Experts reveal that up to 20% of known pregnancies end in a natural miscarriage. The percentage could be higher because women typically miscarry before realizing they are pregnant.

Your ultrasound will show if your pregnancy is growing with a detectable heartbeat, or you have miscarried.

  1. How far along are you in your pregnancy?

Knowing the number of days you’ve been pregnant is especially important if you are considering abortion. The FDA has approved the abortion pill method for up to 70 days or less.

Some studies have shown that the failure rate of the abortion pill method increases the closer you get to 70 days and beyond. As you move into your second trimester (weeks 11 – 13), you may need to think about having a surgical procedure.
